A hot topic among administrators of wealth on Wall Street is for individual investors to have index funds as their assets base and spend the rest of its investment assets in high alpha, which produce returns uncorrelated with the market.

A quick digression for those of you are not familiar with alpha and beta. In the formal financial sector, never the correlation with the broad market index like the S & P 500, is called alpha.

The performance is correlated with the market beta. An index fund should have the same performance (positive or negative) as the index it mimics. (One of the controversies surrounding some ETFs is that their performance has not kept its underlying index.)

The theory Alpha and behind index funds is several aspects: 1. Major indices are a good place for an investor, both in terms of risk and return, 2. can overcome major indices, so do not waste time 3. find investment opportunities in high-alpha to increase performance and reduce the overall risk of your portfolio.

Even if you are not subscribed to this theory, you may find it an interesting exercise to examine alpha – everyone has an investment – of their current holdings. They'll tell you something about the correlation and diversification of its portfolio.

Where to focus your alpha energy? Investments in real estate, commodities and energy are less correlated with the stock market (although I never thought products are tailored to individual investors).

The Wall Street pros also recommend managers equity funds that own strategies and can demonstrate a high alpha relative to the market (and, of course, the relative yield positive).

Ask your investment advisor for suggestions. The alpha for individual funds (and individual actions) are available from certain online brokers and services of superior quality.

Alpha and index fund investing makes sense. You know what to expect in terms of risk and returns by investing in an index fund.

Having a portion of your portfolio in index funds leaving you free to concentrate their investment of time and energy (alpha waves) on the investments you can make a difference.

Picking investments with high alpha, which by their nature are less correlated with the stock market, should reduce risk and volatility of your portfolio and, depending on investment, provide higher yields of market.
