Can anyone tell me how to calculate the S & P500 return using the raw data (dots) from Yahoo Finance?

I need to calculate the 5-year average yield of raw data and the variance and standard deviation.

Since you did not mention if he wanted to return all or annual return, I will answer both. Annual Return: Use the formula: Annual Percentage Yield = (F / P) ^ (1 / n) -1 where F = P = initial value final value N = number of periods in years between baseline and final. From the raw data, select the period at the beginning of the period for which to calculate profitability (baseline) and the point at the end of the period you want (limit value). From the raw data, will have 2 points, say January 1 and December 31, 2009. That would be an "n" 1. If, however, you had 1 January 2008 and June 30, 2009, it would be "n" of 1.5. Plug it into the formula … good to go. If, however, want the total return, use: (Final Value / Initial Value) -1
